Rocky Hill Ranch - Smithville

Rocky Hill has been around since 1993 and is about 45 minutes or so from Austin. The main loop is 13 miles of single track and there are 3 miles of straightforward jeep trail (mid 2022) and there are plans to continue adding mileage. You'll encounter a wide variety of trails, including technical trail features, short steep climbs, twists through the trees, and more. And Fat Chuck's Demise is one hell of a climb! Over the years the owners (Grey and Pam Hill) have had several lease holders, and they have been operating it themselves again for the last several years. After nearly three decades of operation they continue to encourage mountain biking. There are active local volunteers who maintain, build, and ensure there are fun trails to ride.

Review - Blackburn Big Switch Multi-tool

I'm a big fan of interesting multi-tools. There is a huge selection of them, most gravitating around the idea of multiple hex keys in a fold-out chassis. But, as I learned with my Crank Brothers tool, some of the linkage bolts on my full suspension bike were not accessible due to the short ken key length and the size of the tool's width. So I ordered a Blackburn Big Switch that takes a unique approach to the multi-tool market with a T-shaped tool that gives some significant extra leverage.

Review - Maxxis Forekaster Tire

I've been pretty consistent on tires. After shifting to 29" bikes I have ridden Maxxis Ardent (2.4") almost exclusively; I've been very happy with the performance and expectations, especially in corners and sketchy chunk. The other exception is On-One Chunky Monkey (2.4") that I typically have on my singlespeed. I had been running Pirelli Scorpion M tires for a while on my full suspension Orbea Occam and they were fine, but they lacked some of the cornering and grip of the Ardents. I decided to try some Forkasters on my Occam and I find them to be better than the Scorpions but not as good as an Ardent.

Review - Syncros Fork Fender

I am a sucker for purpose-built products; it is just so satisfying when something is made for a particular use and designed to fit perfectly. This fender is one of those cases.

The Syncros Fork Fender is now available for ~$13 and is designed to fit perfectly on a Fox fork. While we do not have trails that can be ridden in the mud, it does serve a purpose in Austin beyond keeping the mud out of your eyes: it block dog poop and rocks from making there way up above your moving wheels.
