Reimer's Ranch

Reimer's Ranch was originally a rock climbing and hunting ranch out in the outskirts of Austin, but they added mountain biking to the list of activities. David Cardosa oversaw the trails and built most of it himself - and did an excellent job at that.

The trails are fast - really fast. With clean lines, broad switchbacks and open spaces, you can really haul across the trails. The signage on the trails is similar to the signs that you see on ski slopes to denote the skill level, green, blue and black.

The ground is very open, so be sure to not only bring water with you but also keep some in a cooler back at your car. Dehydration is very easy out here with all of the direct sunlight.

Remember that you are sharing the trail with livestock in several places, so be mindful of the animals and also watch what you are riding through. And when you look off in the distance and see some weird buildings on a bluff, that's the set from the movie "The Alamo."

Location:

Southwest of Austin around Hamilton Pool

Directions:

Take Highway 71 west of Austin to Hamilton Pool Road. Take a Left on Hamilton Pool Road and follow it for about 11 miles. The County put new signs up so it is much easier to find. Once you turn in, it's about another 2 miles down a very rough road, so take it slow, especially if you are in a low riding car.

Shade:

Low. Wear lots of sunscreen, this is pretty hot terrain. I've never rode in Mexico, but I figure it is probably like this.

Extras:

Camping and rock climbing are also available. The ranch is right on the banks of the Pedernales River, so you can take a quick dip and cool off after your ride. Don't park too close to the river, you may not be able to pull back out!

Fees:

$5 per day to ride

Post Ride Beer:

Tecate - to match the hot countryside. Because this is private property, feel free to bring your own cooler.
