Palo Duro Canyon, Canyon, TX

OK, this is now my favorite place to ride in Texas. It's a bit of a trek, 8 hours each way, but if you want a long weekend, this is the place to go. As you drive up, the Amarillo area is incredibly flat, so flat that you are a bit worried that maybe you made a mistake. Then, when you get to the part you see the second largest canyon in the country.

Location:

Canyon, TX

Directions:

I-35 North to Texas 287 (Past Ft. Worth). Take 287 North to FM 1151. Go west on FM 1151 and then take FM 1541 south, follow the directions to the park.

Technical Level:

Medium on terrain, high on the fact that this is desert riding. Not technical, but you have all types of natural obstacles from vegetation and wildlife.

Length:

25+ total miles in the park.

Trails:

Desert riding - and, rock, cactus, other fun things. The trails are well-maintained, wide and fun, lots of opportunities to get speed, no crazy climbs.
